December 5th, 2023–Knowledge exchange café

This session has already occurred. You can watch the recording here: https://youtu.be/6AQfjRwYwT4
Session description: We have the opportunity to enhance participation within the design and delivery of services focusing on the identification, control and management of Skin NTDs through the utilisation of participatory approaches that can challenge power hierarchies and improve programme equity. Within this engaging session, we will present learnings from the REDRESS consortium on the use of innovative visual methods to design, pilot and evaluate integrated health systems strategies for the improved management of skin NTDs in Liberia. We will also host an interactive panel debate where we hear from persons with lived experience, researchers and policy makers on their experiences of utilising participatory approaches, how this has supported the generation of solutions to existing challenges and the potential such strategies have to redress power imbalances in health service design and strengthening ongoing programme delivery.

Session speakers:
Rosalind McCollum, Research Associate, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is a post-doctoral health systems researcher with fourteen years of health-related experience. Originally trained as a medical doctor, Rozi holds a PhD in International Public Health, and has experience in health systems research and project management. Prior to joining REDRESS, Rozi worked as a humanitarian aid worker in Iraq, supporting Ninewa DoH with strengthening the delivery of primary health care services, during the immediate post-conflict period. Rozi’s research interests include implementation research which seeks to strengthen equitable health service delivery, particularly for marginalised groups.

Wede Tate, Research Fellow, REDRESS programme, UL-PIRE, Liberia provides support in the design of effective integrated strategies for the sustainable, acceptable, and affordable case detection, referral, and treatment of SSSDs. She also contributes to the development of recommendations for the scale up of quality effective interventions within the existing health system infrastructure; and guides analysis of impact of human resource management practices on case detection, referral, and treatment of SSSDs with a specific focus on performance management perspectives. She has worked with the UL-PIRE on an HIV research project and has supported the Ministry of Health through WHO to finalize Liberia’s Neglected Tropical Diseases Master plan including strategy, budget, and one-year operational plan. She obtained a Master of Public Health from Cuttington University in Liberia and studied Health Care Management in Tropical Countries at Swiss Tropical Institute of Public Health.

The session will also include an interactive panel discussion facilitated by Ms. Shahreen Chowdhury, Research Assistant, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with representatives of persons affected, NTD programme managers, county NTD focal points, and research team members, reflecting on the utility and value of participatory approaches in improving equity of NTD programmes in Liberia.

About our Knowledge Exchange Cafés:

The Knowledge Exchange Café is a monthly event which will bring together individuals to network and learn from one another’s research and experience. The emphasis in these discussions will be on the social and behavioural sciences as they relate to Neglected Tropical Diseases and how they help reach the WHO 2030 NTD Roadmap goals. Each Knowledge Exchange Café will include time for networking and conversation to facilitate interaction amongst attendees.

About iCHORDS:

iCHORDS (Improving Community Health Outcomes through Research, Dialogue and Systems Strengthening) Community of Practice is a platform for communication, collaboration and knowledge exchange within social and behavioural science research disciplines to address implementation gaps and current issues facing Neglected Tropical Disease programs.
